just another diamond day, vashti bunyan

remember that sweet, sweet sibylle baier album i posted forever ago? well, if you dug that, then i highly suggest you give vashti bunyan a listen. "just another diamond day" was released in 1970, but didn't receive much notice until quite a few years later. she's finally getting the attention she deserves with the help of devendra banhart, joanna newsom, and a collaboration she did with animal collective. ladies and gentlemen...may i present to you the godmother of freak folk: vashti bunyan.

fantastic mr. fox ost

as far as i'm concerned, everything wes anderson touches is gold. i haven't actually had the chance to see "fantastic mr. fox" yet, but i've heard it truly IS fantastic. the soundtrack certainly is! but uhhhh, duh. of course it is.

you in reverse, built to spill

it is 2:45 in the morning. i have a paper that is worth 25% of my anthropology grade due tomorrow at 9:50am and a huge french presentation at 2:00pm. i don't think my paper is finished and what i do have is not very good. plus, i'm relying on my sister to take 5 minutes from her busy NYU schedule to help me with my french pronunciation. this should be an interesting week. poor shit.

i've spent the past 24 hours listening to built to spill's music exclusively and i've come to the conclusion that "liar" is my favorite song they've done. never have i ever heard lyrics that have hit so close to home. "you in reverse" is a 2006 release, making it one of built to spill's more recent albums...and one i hold near and dear to my heart.

ys, joanna newsom

i love joanna newsom. this is not an album i'd suggest to just anyone. if you like her, you love her. if you don't, you hate her. right now i'm listening to this album with dave and stefan and everything seems perfect. that's how her music makes me feel. especially the first track, "emily". joanna newsom wrote "emily" about her sister and it reminds me so much of MY sister, emily. i doubt she'll ever read this and i would NEVER say this to her face, but...the truth is...i am so proud of her, i think she's the greatest, and i admire her so much. so, here you go. a beautiful album which you may love or you may hate. but i'd hope at this point you'd trust my opinion and at least give it a try.

the drum, bongwater

i can't stop listening to this song. if any of you have the album that this song is on, or can find me just the mp3, i'd REALLY appreciate it.

i love you all.

seriously. i cannot thank you enough for all of your help and support. i have a brand spankin' new macbook pro named ramona and we are both ready to rock. it's been exactly one month today that i made my last post and i feel like it'd be a good time to get this blog rolling again. unfortunately i won't be able to post as often as i'd like to. i mean, right now the majority of the albums on my computer are ones i went back and downloaded off of my blog or ones you so kindly sent me. i'm hoping to post once a week...i still have a few little gems i'd like to share with you all.

so last night. hanging out with some friends. talking to josh. also known as "thor". talkin' about music. talkin' about his music. tells me he's in a band called "care" (i hope that's right...i had like 40 rum and cokes too many). tells me he's doing some solo stuff. ok ok so PAUSE. you know when people say "hey! listen to my music! i think you'll really like it! it's like a cross between jack johnson and fergie...so it'll probably blow your mind because it's just so goddamn original" and you're all like "hey! no! because i'm pretty sure if i listened to it my ears would bleed and then it's going to be super awkward when i have to lie and pretend like it didn't make me want to sit in silence for the rest of my life". yeah that's the WORST, right? yeah, that's not what happened last night. i knew josh's music was going to fucking rule and it totally did. he played a few songs for us last night and i was really impressed, so even though we didn't leave until damn near 5am, i went home and listened to all of it. and then woke up about two hours later and i've been listening to it since.

but none of that has anything to do with the album i'm ACTUALLY going to post today, which we'll discuss in a second. first off: i didn't get permission to share it on my blog and second: i got to get my facts straight. like i said...40 rum and cokes too many and i don't want to babble on (too late) about his music without giving everyone who's in the band credit and yadda yadda yadda.

christ, i need to stop. i don't remember how to blog. a month goes by and i've gotten so used to writing fucking essays for school that it's all i can do anymore. i'm not even done yet! there's still more! i have to talk about miriam makeba because SHE is really what this post is all about. so here we go. miriam makeba is a south african singer whose father was a xhosa which means she can speak isixhosa and it's just really, really cool. i'm an anthropology major, so i don't expect everyone to know what isixhosa is, but i'm sure many of you have heard of the "click" language. yeah, miriam makeba can click and sing and the same time. super impressive, if you ask me. isixhosa has been mastered by few non-native speakers because of it's click consonants which makes it damn near impossible to learn. you'll see what i mean when you watch the video. so ladies in gentlemen, here is miriam makeba's self titled debut, released in 1960. plus a bonus track, "pata pata" i added on because you gotta hear it, folks.
i highly suggest you check out her other video called "the click song". look, here...i'll even give you the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mwh9z58iAU. i can't embed it, but seriously...check it out. i'm a huge nerd and in all likelihood, no one finds this nearly as awesome as i do, but whatever. humor me.

bad news.

so, saturday night someone broke into our house in philadelphia and stole my precious computer. all of my music is gone, never to be seen or heard again. as you can imagine, i'm pretty fucking heart broken and would really appreciate it if you could all help me out by sending me any music you think i might want through mediafire. i won't be getting a new laptop for another month, so i won't be able to download anything until then, but would really appreciate it if you guys could start leaving me albums via comments on here, messages on facebook, messages on myspace...whatever works for you. obviously you don't need to upload albums i've posted on here, but if you could start by sending me classics like all of the beatles, rolling stones, and bob dylan albums i would be so, so, so happy.

you have no idea how much this would mean to me.

urge for going, joni mitchell

autumn is officially here! this is always the first song i think of when i see the leaves begin to turn. my feelings towards this season are bittersweet. i love so many things about it. pumpkins, halloween, kaleidoscopic foliage, horror movies, apple cider...but most of all, autumn has an indescribable energy, a crisp smell, and that beautiful sound of the wind, tangled in a tree's dry leaves. this is my favorite season of them all, but i always worry that i'm not taking it all in; that i'm going to forget how wonderful everything is when winter viciously snatches all of it away from my grip. sigh. but i suppose that's neither here, nor there. that's just the way things are.

moving on! i will be posting less frequently then i have in the past. this will probably fluctuate, as regularity really depends on my workload, which i assume will be inconsistent. just wanted to let you all know. but, hey! i don't think it's a bad thing. i don't want throw 7 albums a week at you because i know you won't be able to listen to it all. instead, i'm going to chose what i post more carefully, so you know for sure that it's worth your time. y'kna what i'm saying? ok, i'm really tired and sickly right now, so i'm going to leave it at that.

...but!

i will be posting a playlist (or possibly an album, i haven't decided yet) this week! be prepared!

break

sorry, dudes, but i gotta take a break from blogging this week. maybe even two weeks. i'm moving to philly tomorrow (i really shouldn't even be taking the time out of packing to make this post), have court, counseling, and doctors appointments, dave's 21st birthday bash, and then holy fuck...school starts. my schedule this semester is insane and i'm probably in way over my head, but i figure i'll get used to the routine of stress, suck it up and get my shit done.

hope you all have a wonderful week!
